2015 From the President Kean Mac Owan

For those following the activities of the Historical Society over the past year you have noticed the WCHS taking a more active roll within the community. In February we kicked off a fund raising effort to redo the White County Court House lawn. We were asked by the county, city and the Monticello Redevelopment Commission to develop a marketing plan to raise funds for renovation. The Historical Society was the primary impetus behind a wildly successful campaign that raised in excess of $100,000.00. Anyone that has walked the courthouse square after the dedication would have to say... "Job Well Done".

In March the WCHS was directly involved with the Patriotic Boat Parade on Lake Freeman where the public saluted our veterans. The Historical Society also actively participated in the afternoon festival events at the Monticello City Park. The WCHS was the catalyst behind this year's "Doin' Canoe'n" event on the most historic stretch of the Tippecanoe River. This benefit raised $15,000 and the monies collected were distributed to school programs and earmarked for scholarships for vocational and technical schools. Other events included our annual dinner where the members and public were entertained by a Hoagie Carmichael reenactor. Those attending the Civil War Walk at the Hughes Cemetery are still commenting how wonderful it was. Of course the Moveable Feast organized by Julie Gutwein was perhaps our best yet. Over the course of the last year numerous historical articles have been published in the local paper and the crowning article was the 40th anniversary tornado edition in the Herald Journal. For the past year weekly quizzes on White County history have appeared in the News & Review. We would like our organization to be able to continue these activities in the future. To insure the organizations future we humbly ask that you consider us in your end of the year donations. We exist through fund raising events, memberships, donations and estate planning by our members and through our county allotment. Please donate to secure our future.

Please remember that we are a 501c3 Not For Profit organization. All donations to us are tax deductible. Make your checks to; White County Historical Society and send to 101 S. Bluff Street, Monticello, Indiana 47960 or call 574.583.3998 to Judy Baker for more information.

We are always looking for Volunteer?

Directors Wish List

We would love to have anyone interested in becoming a volunteer at the Museum please contact the Director Judy.

Whatever your time and interests are, we can put you to work.  We have lots of ideas that we would like the manpower to implement them.  Many can even be done in your home  if you have a computer.

Some items we would like worked on are:

Civil War Notebooks

Township books

Obituary books

We could use your help with donations of Monticello High School Yearbooks for  1905 & 1909 through 1914.
  Also 1916 through 1941

**********

We have several photographs that need your help. Come in and see if you can identify folks.
